Wilma Ruth (Mitchem) Southers, 94, of New Albany, Indiana, passed away on Friday, April 12, 2019. Wilma was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church and loved cooking and serving her neighborhood children the food and candy she made.
She was born on September 15, 1924, in New Albany, Indiana, to the late Nathan and Stella (Bunch) Mitchem. Along with her parents, Wilma is preceded in death by her siblings, John, Mae, Bill, Charles, Albert, Norma, Robert, Earl, Charlotte, and Leon.
Left to cherish her memory, Wilma is survived by her sons, Robert (Gail) Southers and Richard (Sylvia) Southers; grandchildren, Sicely, LaToya, RoChelle, Amanda, Richard, Jr., and Robert, Jr.; 13 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; faithful sister-in-law, Emma Mitchem; and special friends, Arthur Hardin, Sherry Burley, Tracy Faulkner, Marcia Booker, and Betsy Mae Allen. The family would like to extend their heart-felt thank to Amedisys Hospice for all their care and kindness.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon on Friday, April 19, 2019, at Bethel A.M.E Church (315 East Fifth Street, New Albany, IN). Her Funeral Service will be at 12:00 Noon on Friday at the church. Burial will take place on Saturday, April 20, at 9:00 a.m. at West Haven Cemetery in New Albany.
