William Thomas

September 6, 1938 — May 15, 2017

William Thomas was born to Mary and Ellis Thomas in York, Alabama on September 1, 1938. He transitioned to his eternal home on May 15, 2017 at 11:12 p.m. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and brothers Ellis and Willie Thomas.

William confessed his love for Christ at an early age. He was a devoted and faithful member of Pure in Heart Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years. He was a singer in the Pure in Heart Brotherhood choir. He worked at Methodist Hospital and retired after 30 years.

William was married to Mary Etta Lake March 8, 1958 in Mississippi. They relocated to Louisville, Kentucky. They were blessed with two children; Lynda Fitzpatrick (Elijah) of Jeffersonville, Indiana and Louis Thomas (Tomekia) of Louisville, Kentucky. In 1994, he wed Christine Elliott and in addition to their union came Endora Brown, Jamie, Antonio, Jessie and Adrain Elliott.

William was a loving, supportive and caring grandfather. God blessed him with eight grandchildren: Elijah Fitzpatrick III (Destinee), Yolanda Fitzpatrick, Tonay Brasher, Isaiah Fitzpatrick, Tiffany Fitzpatrick, Mahogany Livers, Louis Thomas Jr., Micah Fitzpatrick, Isaiah Jenkins. He was also blessed with three great grandchildren: Anieyah Brasher, Eloni and Princeton Fitzpatrick. William is survived by his sisters, Hattie Hare, Mary Thomas and a host of nieces and nephews.

William was a man with a big heart and he never met a stranger. He was a kind hearted giant with an endless appetite. William also loved to sing, one of his favorite songs was "Try Jesus, He's Alright". He was a strong believer in God and never let his condition interfere with his spirit. He believed that God would make everything alright in his own time and not a minute sooner or too late. One of his favorite quotes was "Keep God first and you can't lose". He will be remembered for his love and devotion for God and his family, his sense of humor, his generous heart and his love for cookies.

A gathering will be on Saturday, May 20, 2017, from 10am-11am at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church (2973 Wilson Avenue, Louisville, KY) with a celebration of William's life beginning at 11am.
