William Joseph Hawkins, 67, of New Albany, Indiana, passed away on Monday, October 31, 2016. He was a United States Army and Marine Corps veteran and a member of Second Baptist Church in New Albany where he served as a Deacon under the leadership of Pastor LeRoy Marshall. William retired from the New Albany Street Department after over 30 years of service. He enjoyed singing and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
He was born on November 30, 1948, in Brooklyn, New York, to the late William and Sadie (Pergram) Hawkins. William was also preceded in death by his son, William Hawkins; and siblings, Sadie Grant and Harrison Hawkins.
William is survived by his wife of 36 years, Shirley (Gordon) Hawkins; children, Tyler Hawkins (Sarita), Rev. Dwayne Tutt (Janice), Rev. Henry Tutt (Linda), Michael Tutt (Frieda), Rev. Angela Tutt, and Karen Woods (Kenneth); sisters, Janet Turner (John), Judy Ward, and Mary Ann Hawkins; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family members and friends.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday, November 5, 2016, at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). His Funeral Service will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday in the chapel at the funeral home with burial to follow at West Haven Cemetery in New Albany.
