William Roy Gerstenlauer, lovingly known to those close to him as Roy, passed away on June 25, 2026, at the age of 66. Born on May 19, 1960, Roy’s life was marked by kindness, joy, and a deep devotion to his family.
Roy spent 35 years working at Big O Tires as a gifted mechanic—a true testament to his dedication and work ethic. His loyalty and commitment in his career built many relationships and left an impact on those who had the privilege to work alongside him. After his long tenure at Big O Tires, Roy continued his journey at Isco, where he kept offering his remarkable problem-solving skills and affable nature.
But it was at home where Roy’s spirit truly shone. Known for his goofy antics, infectious laughter, and endless teasing, he brought light and warmth to every room he entered. His positive attitude and loving nature drew people in effortlessly. Animals, too, sensed this goodness; Roy was an animal lover at heart, doting endlessly on his dogs and grand-dogs. In every wagging tail and joyful bark, there was a reflection of Roy’s gentle soul.
Roy’s greatest pride and joy were his beloved grandchildren, Roy and Ashley Bohannon. They were, without question, his world. He cherished every moment with them, whether through adventures at the casino, afternoons tinkering in his garage, or sharing family gatherings filled with love and laughter. Roy’s hobbies became ways for him to learn alongside those he loved and to pass down stories and lessons with a grin.
His legacy lives on in those who survive him: his dear wife, Debbie Gerstenlauer, who shared in life’s everyday joys and challenges with him; his daughter, Amanda Bohannon, who brought him immense pride; his son, Anthony Gerstenlauer; and those precious grandchildren, Roy and Ashley Bohannon, whose laughter and milestones became the highlights of his days.
Roy was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Lacks; his father, Lewis Gerstenlauer; and his brother, Paul Gerstenlauer. Though sorrowful to say goodbye, the family finds comfort in the thought of Roy reunited with those he loved who have gone before him.
A visitation will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southwest Louisville, 10304 Dixie Hwy, Louisville, KY, on July 2, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will take place during the visitation at 6:00 p.m. at the same location. All who knew and loved Roy are welcome to come, share memories, and celebrate the legacy of laughter and love he leaves behind.
Roy’s spirit—the laughter echoing down a hallway, the warmth in a familiar embrace, the unspoken lessons tucked into late afternoons—remains ever-present in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
