William "Frank" Schildknecht

William “Frank” Schildknecht, fondly known as “Frank the Tank,” passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loved ones, on August 4, 2026. Born on April 21, 1948, in Louisville, Kentucky, Frank’s life was a testament to service, love, and joyful generosity.

Frank was a proud alumnus of Flaget High School, Class of 1967. He continued his academic pursuits at Bellarmine, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in both History and English. His education was a source of great pride throughout his life, and he cherished the knowledge and perspective it brought him.

For nine years, Frank served his country honorably in the Army Reserves, exemplifying his steadfast commitment to community and nation. His sense of duty extended beyond his military service to every aspect of his life, touching all who knew him with his quiet strength and unwavering reliability.

Frank devoted himself wholeheartedly to his family, who were truly the center of his universe. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Susan Schildknecht, who journeyed alongside him through life’s joys and challenges. His children—Karen (Tommy), Kevin, Bobby, Missy (Chris), Stacy (Larry), and Laura (Jay)—were his most treasured accomplishments. Frank found immeasurable joy in watching them grow, supporting their adventures, and guiding them with wisdom and compassion.

Equally cherished were his grandchildren: Christian (Rebecca), Alexis, Cameron, Joseph, Townshend, Hayden, Landon, McKenzie, and Skylar. Each one brought new laughter and pride into his life. The next generation, represented by his great-grandchild, Jaxxon, extended his legacy of warmth and love. Frank is also survived by his loving sister, Kathy.

Those who knew Frank will remember him as a true “jack of all traits,” a man gifted at turning every acquaintance into a friend. Frank never met a stranger; his kindness, humor, and willingness to lend a hand were legendary. Whether coaching or playing softball, volleyball, or bowling, his role as a mentor was felt deeply by those he led. He loved educating about his Cherokee heritage, cheering on the Kentucky Wildcats and Pittsburgh Steelers, fishing, camping, horse shoes, constructing model RC airplanes, and challenging himself with a nightly round of Jeopardy. The lake and ocean called to him, and he never missed an opportunity to share these passions with family and friends.

Frank’s character was shaped by his generosity and spirit of giving. If someone needed help—no matter how big or small—Frank was there with encouragement or a solution, often accompanied by a witty phrase: “Five Dollars,” shared with a laugh. His legacy as a “life coach” resonates in the countless lives he touched and uplifted.

Among his endeavors, Frank’s proudest achievements remained his family, his children, his education, and his service. These milestones were not merely personal but woven into the fabric of his community, leaving a lasting imprint of care and commitment.

Family and friends are invited to honor Frank’s memory at visitation, which will be held on Friday, August 14, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, East Louisville, located at 235 Juneau Dr, Louisville, KY 40243. A Mass celebrating Frank’s life will follow on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Saint Bartholomew Catholic Church, 2040 Buechel Bank Road, Louisville, KY 40218.

William “Frank” Schildknecht leaves behind a legacy defined by love, laughter, and a steadfast devotion to others. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit endures in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
