William Morris "Bill" Finley, Sr., 88, lifelong resident of New Albany, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2020. After a brief stint in the United States Army, Bill went to work for the United States Postal Service and had a career that spanned 45 years. He is known throughout the community for being friendly and having a contagious smile, never meeting a stranger. Bill became involved and served the community for over 30 years with the personal mission to ensure inclusion and provide access for the disadvantaged youth in our community. He was a member of Jones Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church where he served for many years as a Trustee and Trustee Emeritus.
He was born on March 29, 1931, in New Albany, Indiana, to the late James and Anna (Ingram) Finley. Bill was also preceded in death by his son, Gerald Kimbrough; grandson, William Finley III; and sisters, Anna Marie Finley and Rosa Bell.
Bill is survived by his children, William Finley, Jr. (Berba) and Lisa Finley-Shirley (William); grandchildren, Là Toi Finley, Shayla Finley, Amber Finley, and Nate Weaver III; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 27, 2020, at Jones Memorial AME Zion Church (258 Ealy Street, New Albany) with his funeral service taking place at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at West Haven Cemetery in New Albany.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bill's memory may be made to the Windzell Thomas - William Finley Christian Youth Scholarship (c/o Jones Memorial AME Zion Church).
