William Warren Chanley, Sr., on a beautiful autumn morning, left this earth to be with his brother, Bob. He passed on November 8, 2020, at the age of 89 years. Bill was born to Pansy Thornton and Lawrence Chanley in Madison, Indiana, on July 30, 1931. He was one of ten children.
While a baby, Bill and four of his siblings and parents came down the Ohio River from Madison on a flat boat. They eventually settled in Leavenworth, Indiana. He and his brother, Bob, grew up working on the river.
Bill married Peggy Ballard, and they had two sons, Bill and Jeff. He was especially fond of his grandson, Logan, and his great-granddaughter, Norah.
He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, retired from L&N Railroad, and went on to serve as City Controller for New Albany for several years.
The family would like to thank the staff at Silvercrest Rehab Center for their excellent care and for treating Bill like a member of their family.
Cremation was chosen according to Bill's wishes, and he will be laid to rest privately with military honors at Leavenworth Memorial Gardens. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (6100 Dutchmans Lane, Suite 401, Louisville, KY 40205).
