Warner Davis “Barney” Long, age 85, of Louisville, Kentucky passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family, on Wednesday July 24, 2024. He fought a 20-year battle with mantle cell lymphoma, beating the odds and giving all the glory to God. He exemplified this by serving people with the love of Christ until the day he left this earth.
Barney was born in Paintsville, KY to the late John C. Long and Elizabeth Upton Long and was the second of four children. His siblings, Jack Long (Jeanette), Earl Long (Sandy) and Linda Long Filippini (Richard) all preceded him in death. He grew up in East Louisville and enjoyed life on his family farm. He played football at Eastern High School where he made life-long friends and met his beloved wife of 65 years, Sally Hudson Long.
Barney attended Duke University and graduated from Louisville Speed School with a degree in Chemical Engineering. An entrepreneur by nature, he founded, owned, and managed Catalyst Technology Inc. After an early retirement, Barney devoted himself to serving God and caring for people. He also found time to perfect his golf game. He was involved in multiple Metro area ministries; Louisville Young Life, The Cabbage Patch (Streetball Showdown), and Southeast Men’s Mentoring. He often stated that this season of his life was the most meaningful by saying “God never retired, why should we?”
Barney is survived by his loving wife, Sally Hudson Long; daughters, Shelly Marshall (Rob), Cindy Neal (Ed) and Jennifer Shown (Ben); grandchildren include Emily Rademeyer, Eric Marshall, Taylor Elder, Davis Church, Rachel Devarenne, Scott, Stacy, Ryan, Tyler and Jonathan Neal, Emily Kuhn and Julie Gustafson. Barney also enjoyed his many beautiful great-grandchildren. Barney was looking forward to heaven and being with his Savior. He lived an extraordinary life and will be missed by many, but none more than his wife, daughters, son in laws, and his precious grandchildren.
Visitation will be 4pm to 7pm on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals and Receptions, East Louisville Chapel, 235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, Kentucky 40243 and at Chapel in the Woods, 1407 Moser Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40299 from 11 am to 1 pm on Wednesday, July 31st.
