Born on January 14, 1932, in Pinsonfork, KY, Walter’s life journey was marked by resilience, dedication, and profound love for his family.
Walter’s early years in the rugged terrain of Eastern Kentucky Coal Mines shaped his character and spirit. He took great pride in his humble beginnings before moving to Louisville, KY, where he built a meaningful and impactful life. A standout football player at Belfry High School in 1950, Walter was admired not just for his athletic talents but also for his inspiring integrity and determination.
His professional career was equally distinguished, having retired from positions at International Harvester and General Electric. Walter’s expertise as a skilled electrician reflected his meticulous nature and commitment to excellence. Throughout his career, he was respected by colleagues and friends alike, not only for his technical abilities but also for the generosity and warmth he extended to all he encountered.
Walter, affectionately known as “Commando” to his family until the very end, was truly the kindest man. He was known to give selflessly, often described by those who knew him as someone who would give the shirt off his back. His warmhearted nature ensured he never met a stranger; everyone who crossed his path felt the genuine compassion and goodness that defined him. One of his cherished hobbies was growing prize-winning tomatoes, a testament to his patience and nurturing spirit.
Walter’s greatest joy in life was his family, whom he dearly loved. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Della (Blackburn) Wilson, and their daughter Debby Thomas, along with son-in-law Chris Thomas. His memory is cherished by his surviving children: Steve (Beth) Wilson, Cyndi (Danny) Risen, and Kim (James) Atkinson. Walter’s legacy continues through his grandchildren Missy (Scott), Christopher (Anita), Amber, Jason, Sarah (Carley), and James II, and great-grandchildren Taylor (Seth), Charles (Sierra), Shelby, Ayame, and Coty. The family pet, Junie, was also a beloved member of his close-knit circle.
Walter’s journey ended just as he had lived—with dignity, surrounded by those who loved him most. His funeral arrangements include a visitation on April 20, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 12:00 p.m. at SpiritLife Church of God, located at 6901 Outer Loop, Louisville, KY 40228.
