Walter Joseph McKnight

Walter Joseph McKnight, born on May 10, 1926, in Elizabeth, Indiana, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2026 in New Albany, Indiana, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family. Walter’s journey spanned a remarkable century, and with each passing year, he touched countless lives with his unwavering dedication to family, his enduring character, and his heartfelt joy in life’s simple pleasures.

Walter’s early years in Elizabeth laid a strong foundation for his lifelong love of the outdoors—a passion he would later share with his own children, piling them into their cherished 1960s Chevy Kingswood for family camping trips, with ten children and all the camping gear aboard, always with ease and happiness. Those excursions were only some of the many loving memories he gave his family, who recall with gratitude his enthusiasm for Sunday drives and long days spent surrounded by the beauty of nature, often camping, hunting, fishing, or playing golf. Walter found peace and fulfillment beneath the open skies, and his children will forever cherish the times their father led them into the woods, or down a winding country road, simply enjoying each other’s company.

Walter’s sense of service to his country began early. As a proud U.S. Navy man, he served honorably during World War II. His commitment was recognized with numerous medals and awards, including the Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one star. His family remembers the quiet pride with which Walter wore his service, and the respect he earned for his courage and discipline, qualities that shone through in all that he did.

Returning home, Walter committed himself to building a better future for his loved ones. He diligently worked for many years at General Electric, embodying the values of hard work and integrity both in and out of the workplace. Walter also held in high esteem the power of education, proudly earning his GED and encouraging those around him to pursue knowledge and self-improvement.

Walter’s proudest accomplishment was always his family—watching them grow and thrive brought him the deepest joy. He devoted his life to them—as a loyal husband, a devoted father, a loving brother, and grandfather. Those who knew Walter remember him as straightforward and honest, a man whose hardworking hands offered guidance, security, and warmth.

He was preceded in death by his loving wives, Alma and Mercedes, his father Walter H. McKnight, his mother Mary C. McKnight, his daughter Mary Jean McKnight, his son Louis McKnight (Brenda), and his siblings Mary Mauch, Ann Schulz, Alice Mathers, Jenny Rupp, Kenny McKnight, and Jim McKnight.

Walter’s enduring legacy continues in the hearts of his surviving family: his sons James P. McKnight (Bruce), Thomas McKnight (Jan), Charles McKnight (Deborah), Mark McKnight (Bonnie), Ralph McKnight (KK), Ronald McKnight (Kim), and Robert McKnight (Glenda); his daughters Betty Ann Kirchgessner (Al), Janet Rowe (Allan), Kathy Gardner (Michael), and Peggy Warner (Gary); his sister Dorothy Kasse; his daughter-in-law Brenda McKnight; 22 grandchildren, 23 Great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, and in the cherished memories held by all his extended family.

The family invites friends and loved ones to join them in honoring Walter’s life during the visitation on Sunday, July 26, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00, p.m.  with a Rosary held at 4:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southern Indiana, 3309 Ballard Ln, New Albany, IN 47150. A Mass will be held Monday, July 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St Mary of the Knobs Chapel, 3033 Martin Rd, Floyds Knobs, IN 47119.
