Virginia Lucille Higdon, beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2026, in her lifelong hometown of Louisville, KY, at the age of 101.

Born on April 20, 1925, in Louisville, Kentucky, Virginia was the treasured daughter of Henry and Cora Smith. Throughout her remarkable life, she embodied a spirit that was as feisty and stubborn as it was deeply loving. Her resilience, strength, and unwavering devotion to family marked the measure of her days and shaped all those who knew her.

Virginia found the love of her life in James Oliver Higdon, with whom she built a life filled with laughter, perseverance, and enduring partnership until his passing. Together, they raised six children—a feat that remained her greatest accomplishment and source of pride. Virginia devoted herself fully to her family, ensuring that her home was always a place of warmth, love, and honesty.

Friends and family will remember Virginia for her zest for life and the joys she found in daily pleasures. She loved going to the casino, where her lively spirit shone in every game, and she took immense satisfaction from working in her yard, nurturing the beauty around her. Yet, it was time spent with her family that brought her the truest happiness, whether in moments of quiet conversation or boisterous gatherings.

Virginia's legacy lives on through her surviving children: James F. Higdon (Sherry), Jennifer Bratcher, and Lisa Kyser (Jimbo), as well as her much-loved daughter-in-law, Karen Higdon. Her memory continues in her 18 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren, whose lives are a testament to her enduring love and guidance. She is also lovingly remembered and reunited with her late husband, James Oliver Higdon; her parents, Henry and Cora Smith; her children, Judy Fears, Freddie Higdon, and Danny Higdon; her son-in-law, Joe Fears; her daughter-in-law, Mary Higdon; and her grandson, Frankie Higdon.

A Celebration of Life honoring Virginia will be held on August 15, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM at River Forest Country Club, 6318 River Forest Drive, Louisville, KY 40258. All who knew and loved Virginia are invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate the extraordinary woman she was.

Virginia Lucille Higdon will be missed dearly, but her indelible spirit, steadfast love, and generational impact will continue to inspire and guide her family and friends in the years to come.
