Listen to Obituary

Vincentine M. “Jimmie French” Watson’s journey, which began in Rochester, New York on September 1, 1927, drew peacefully to a close on June 28, 2026 in Louisville, Kentucky. With her passing, a remarkable tapestry of resilience, kindness, and unconditional family devotion is lovingly remembered by all who knew her.

Jimmie French, as she was fondly called, was a woman whose life glowed with the warmth of togetherness and heart of service. Born to Anna Defazio and Michael Angelo Defazio. Jimmie learned early the profound importance of holding family near. Through joys and sorrows, she remained steadfastly close to her siblings—Michael Defazio, who survives her, and predeceased by her husbands, Joseph C. French, Sr. and Harold Watson, along with her brothers and sisters: Jimmy Boy, Frannie, Franklin, Rosie, Mary, and Sarah. As a daughter, sister, mother, and friend, she was always a gentle anchor, steadfast and true.

Her heart and home were blessed with children: Donnie, Ronnie, Skip, Tony, Speedy, Mark, and Debbie, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family and friends whose lives each carry a measure of her example and grace. She is also held in loving memory by her late son, Joseph "Skip" French, Jr. whose spirit remains eternally cherished.

Vincentine’s career was testament to her tireless work ethic and connection to her community. After many years as a housewife, she entered the workforce, first at Burks Grocery Store and later at Horton’s Fruit Market—a place where she became a beloved fixture for 35 years. It was only at age 85 that she allowed herself retirement, and even then, her industrious spirit never waned.

Family was the vibrant centerpiece of Jimmie French’s world. Her home was often the site of raucous family gatherings, with unforgettable weekly get-togethers and sun-dappled picnics where laughter came easily and love was stitched into every memory. She delighted in playing sports or simply being active with her children and grandchildren, and treasured cheering on the UofK Wildcats in every sport, rallying her family around the television. Late nights spent playing endless varieties of card games were a nod to her playful spirit; every hand dealt was an invitation to joy and connection.

Described by all as kind, outgoing, carefree, and especially family-oriented, Jimmie French’s legacy is best measured in the closeness she fostered among loved ones. Her genuine presence could light even the darkest days, and those fortunate enough to call her mother, sister, or friend knew both the strength of her support and the comfort of her smile.

Family and friends will gather to pay their respects and celebrate her extraordinary life at a visitation on July 7, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southwest Louisville. A funeral service will be held at the same location on July 8, 2026, beginning at 10:00 AM. Vincentine will then be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery, 1600 Newburg Road, Louisville, KY 40205.

Vincentine M. “Jimmie French” Watson leaves behind a legacy woven through the lives of her children and brother, and quietly echoes in the memories of every beloved soul who predeceased her. She lived her life as she loved her family—with unwavering devotion, ceaseless energy, and unending grace. Her story is a reminder of the boundless beauty found in a life well lived, and her memory will be treasured and celebrated always.
