Listen to Obituary

Veris Modean English, 86, was born on November 18, 1939, in Eastwood, Kentucky, to Roscoe English and Mary Alice Melinda Jenkins. She passed from this life on October 25, 2026.

After the early and sudden passing of her mother, Veris grew up in foster care in Eastwood with her mother's friend, Ms. Marie. She graduated from The Lincoln Institute in Shelby County, Kentucky, in 1957.

She accepted Christ at an early age. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and later joined the Baptized Pentecostal Church of Holiness.

On February 5, 1965, Veris married James Edward Thomas Sr. They shared 46 years of marriage until his sudden death on March 8, 2011.

She had a strong work ethic and held several jobs, beginning on her foster family's farm. She later worked at the ammunition plant in Jeffersonville, Indiana, before joining General Electric as an assembly worker. She retired from GE after 24 years of service.

Veris was a longtime member of Alcoholics Anonymous and a devoted sponsor to many sponsees. She loved helping women and was asked to speak countless times, even though she didn't like the attention. She often traveled to out-of-state conferences and encouraged other sponsors and sponsees to look beyond their local meetings. She loved to travel with her husband on cruises, UofL basketball games, and with other couples on shopping and sightseeing trips, and taking the grandkids to Disney World and Kings Island.

She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and she helped raise her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roscoe English and Mary Alice Melinda Jenkins, her husband, James Edward Thomas Sr., and her daughter, Linda May.

Veris will be sadly missed by her sons, Lawrence “Tommy” May and James E. Thomas Jr. (LaVita); daughter, Michelle Thomas; nephew, Hosea Lee Beeler; niece, Veris English “Lil Veris;” grandsons, Jarren Thomas (Dominique), Jermiah Thomas (Monet), and Bryson Thomas (MarJai), and Tymetrius Walter; granddaughters, Orvette Walter, Angelica Nash, and Nina; and multiple great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.

Visitation will be on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at Baptized Pentecostal Church of Holiness, 1606 West Chestnut Street, Louisville, KY, 40203, from 10am-12pm with a celebration of Veris's life beginning at 12pm.
