Vaughn Edward Winslow was born on January 9, 1949, in Kokomo, Indiana, to the late Delbert and Glory (Bennett) Winslow. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Denise (Egler) Winslow; daughter, Jenna Winslow; son, Tyler Winslow; and grandson, William "Braxton" Winslow. He was a dedicated family man, who loved his wife and children unconditionally.
He was a 1967 graduate of Maconaquah High School. He earned a B.S. degree in Geology from Indiana State University in 1971 and then a Masters Degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, in Instructional Technology and Science Education in 1976. He was an ambassador of Phi Delta Kappa. He was first employed with the Indiana Geological Survey where he worked in the coal section. The survey made use of his extensive knowledge in coal geology of Western Indiana and the Illinois basin. From this position he moved into several administrative assignments while being employed by Indiana University for 25 years. He severed on the Bloomington and Kokomo campuses and 18 years at Indiana University Southeast in New Albany, Indiana.
While at IUS he served as a full-time administrator and adjunct faculty member. He was honored as "Employee of the Year" in 1988 and served two terms as the secretary of the Facility Senate. He was highly respected for his dedication to serve the needs of the faculty and students. He also served as the university photographer and took numerous historical photos of university luminaries and noted visitors. Some of the photographs are on permanent display at Indiana University, Bloomington. He was known for his keen intellect and engaging sense of humor, while commanding the respect of all he knew.
He was an avid reader who seemingly could discuss most any subject. An active member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, he was a student for the history of high school and college basketball in the state of Indiana. Always eager to share his knowledge with anyone who was interested, he took great pride in telling stories of seeing so many past greats of the game. He authored several articles on basketball history for the Hall of Fame. An avid fan of Indiana University basketball and football, he rarely missed seeing a game either in person or on television. He often joked that he "hoped to live long enough to see Indiana go to the Rose Bowl once again." He was considered an expert on most types of sports memorabilia and maintained an extensive personal collection.
