Vanzel "Van" Centers, 86, of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, August 8, 2020. Van was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the Floyds Knobs American Legion. He liked camping and driving his RV any chance he could, especially to his "old home place" in Kentucky. Van was the past owner of Van's Cafe in New Albany and president of S.G. & V. Equipment, Inc. in which he operated with his daughter, Susan. He spent 55 years on the road as an owner operator truck driver
Van was born on February 24, 1934 in Garrison, Kentucky to the late Everett Centers and Goldy (Horsley) Centers-Schmeltzer. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Gladys Centers; and siblings, Rex, Betty, and Victor.
Van is survived by his daughter, Susan (Jerry) Hussung; granddaughter, Tonya (Sam) Powers; great-grandchildren, Jonas and Josie Powers. He had 9 step-sons and 2 step-daughters with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren by his late wife Glayds; and many other extended family members and friends.
Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - New Albany, (3309 Ballard Lane). His Funeral Service will be at 1:00 pm on Thursday, at the funeral home with burial and military honors to follow at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Jeffersonville, Indiana.
The family requests that contributions in Van's memory be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
