Twyla Sue Walker, 83, of New Albany, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. She will be remembered for always having a smile on her face, being polite, friendly and ready to help anyone. You could catch her driving about town in her 1965 yellow Mustang, and later her Miata.
She was born on December 20, 1942 to the late Durward Brewer and Dorothy Price Brewer. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her sisters, Tammy Hedrick and Sheila Judd.
As a youth she was active in both rainbow girls and girl scouts. She was surprised to learn that yearbooks and pictures of her years at Knightstown are displayed in the “Hoosiers Gym." Also, she was a descendant of John Potts for which both Pottstown and Pottsville Pennsylvania are named.
Twyla spent 51 years in the medical field. She started by attending nursing school at Ball Memorial Hospital, and then moved to New Albany and worked in the lab at Floyd Memorial Hospital. Later, she worked at Jewish Hospital where she gained more experience and the opportunity to work as a Medical Assistant and Office Manager in a Plastic Surgery office. She finally retired after years of working at Kleinert Kutz Hand Care. She really enjoyed the time she spent in the surgical aspects of medical care.
She was an avid reader of political figures and recreational material. She enjoyed gardening, scrap-booking, collecting dolls, completing puzzles, antiquing, good/quality food, arts/crafts/music/food festivals, travel, bed and breakfasts. She also liked chaperoning school trips at Slate Run and Scribner Junior High with trips to places like Chicago, Colonial Williamsburg, and Washington D.C., as well as traveling to Gaylord OpryLand Resort and her favorite, West Baden Springs. She spent many summers with her family on their Houseboat at Dale Hollow Lake where she took many photos and organized the trips.
She was extremely dedicated and supportive in all family activities such as swimming, orchestra, Job’s Daughters, and the many hours that go into being a horse show mom - organizing/buying food, riding to the shows, preparing clothing and quick clothing changes between classes. Her caring and attentive nature also led her to hosting a French student for over a year.
Twyla was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was interactive and engaging with her grandsons and never missing a birthday or holiday using her unique knack to find the perfect card and gift - including a Kringle that would match the season and/or event.
Twyla is survived by her loving husband of nearly 62 years, Jerry Walker; daughter, Julie (Dr. Jeffrey Schabler) Walker; her grandsons, Colten Schabler and Westen Schabler; and her feline companion, Mojo.
Cremation was chosen following Twyla's wishes. She will be laid to rest at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky at a later date.
