Thomas William Hess, known to many as Tommy, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 3, 2026, at the age of 76. Born on July 4, 1950, Tommy was a son, brother, uncle, and great-uncle whose life reflected curiosity, dedication, and a deep appreciation for the world around him.
At a young age, Tommy moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he lived for several years. During that time, he developed a strong passion for reptiles and for conservation efforts connected to them. His interests also carried him far beyond home, and he traveled to Cambodia multiple times, immersing himself in the language and culture there. Those experiences spoke to his adventurous spirit and his desire to learn from the people and places he encountered. Tommy eventually returned home to New Albany, where he embarked on a long career in pharmacy.
Tommy will be remembered with love by his family. He is survived by his sister, Sally Robinson; his nephew, Sam Robinson and his wife, Xinyi; his great-nephews, Samuel Robinson, Jr., Jullian Robinson and his wife, Amanda; and great-niece, Dossey Robinson.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Hess; his mother, Ella Hess; and his brother, Charles Hess.
Tommy's wish was to be cremated. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2026 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany).
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Tommy's memory may be made to the Amphibian & Reptile Conservancy.
