Thomas "Tom" Daniel Oakley, a beloved father and grandfather, passed away on July 14, 2025, in Louisville, Kentucky, at the age of 74. He was born on October 22, 1950, in Jeffersonville, Indiana.
Tom lived a life marked by dedication, service, and love for his family and community. A proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, he carried that same sense of duty and integrity into his civilian life. He worked for many years at Jeff Boat and later with the Greater Clark County School System, where he was known for his strong work ethic and kind spirit.
Tom made his home in Lexington, Indiana, where he enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He was a devoted member of the American Legion Post 234 in Scottsburg, Indiana. A passionate sports fan, Tom cheered for IU basketball and Alabama football. He also enjoyed watching old westerns and Leave It to Beaver, taking long side-by-side rides, and attending tractor shows. Saturday mornings spent with his nephew, Gary Holmes, were among his favorite times.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents Hugo Oakley and Florence Griffin Oakley Russell; brother, Randy Oakley; and sister, Patty Cochran.
He is survived by his son, Douglas (Crystal) Oakley; daughter, April (Brian) Bailey; grandchildren, Canton (Kelcee) Bailey, Conner Bailey, Blake Wallace, and Chris Wallace; and great-granddaughter, Riverlyn. Each of them carries cherished memories of their time together and the love he shared.
Thomas Daniel Oakley will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Cremation was chosen following Tom's wishes and he will be laid to rest with full military honors at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison, Indiana at a later date.
