Theodore J. Ising, Jr.

April 29, 1931 — September 7, 2018

Ising, Jr., Theodore J. (Ted), MSSW, ACSW, Diplomate, 87, passed away on September 7, 2018. Ted graduated from Okolona High School in 1949 (Senior Class President). He worked at Standard Gravure with the Louisville Courier Journal. He was in the Air Force during the Korean War, in the Air Police program. He graduated from Nebraska State Teachers College in Chadron, Nebraska, completing four majors in: History, Social Sciences, Political Science & Education. He earned his Masters from UofL's Kent School.

He was a retired Psychiatric Social Worker, with many years spent working in both Community Mental Health and State Psychiatric Hospitals. He taught courses at Eastern College in Somerset, Evansville College and at UofL. He started the Somerset, Eastern KY Community Mental Health Center, and helped start the Evansville Adult Mental Health Center. He helped re-start the Elizabethtown Mental Health Center. He started Seven Counties Services (now called Centerstone, KY), back when it was originally known as River Region. He finished his career at Central State Hospital as Director of Staff Development & Training.

He trained, mentored and supervised a large number of professionals in DSM I through III-R, and helped many MSW's earn their professional credentials. He was proud of the fact that he wrote over $13 million in grants for numerous programs and Centers. He is listed as a pioneer in the field of Community Mental Health in the "Encyclopedia of Louisville" under Mental Health. He loved gardening, working on his farm in Franklin County, collecting stamps & coins, African Art, reading, and living long enough to enjoy Great Grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his daughter Mary "Angel" Angelisa Ising, parents Theodore "Doe" Ising, Sr. & Bernice (Schneider) & his brother James Ising (Diana).

Ted is survived by his wife Patrice (Will) Ising, daughters Kelly Ising, Michele Black (Daniel), and son Theodore "Todd" Ising, III (Caroline), sister Gloria Nash; ten grandchildren: Chris Brown (Hallie), Joshua Ising, Dane Black (Mari), Lauren Black, Logan Black, Chelsea Ising, Haley Ising, Kristia "Tia" Ising, Chelsey Hamilton, Kristin Hamilton; and four Great Grandchildren: Liam & Bennett "Ben" Black, & Olivia & Jack Brown.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals and Receptions East Chapel (235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, KY 40243)

Expressions of Sympathy may be made to programs that advocate & support Mental Health, Veterans or KET public T.V.
