Thelma "Sandy" Nadine Settle, a beloved figure in her community, passed away on December 17, 2025, at the age of 91. She was born on August 4, 1934, in New Albany, Indiana.
Thelma was known for her culinary skills, particularly her talent for making delicious homemade bread, affectionately named the "bread of life." This beloved bread would frequently be shared at gatherings, with any leftovers at church quickly finding new homes. Her generosity extended beyond the kitchen; she and her husband Roy were honored volunteers at the Salvation Army, reflecting their commitment to serving their community. Thelma was active in Heartland Church of the Nazarene, where she touched many lives with her warmth and kindness.
Her vibrant personality drew people to her. Sandy loved playing games with her grandchildren, often filled with laughter and, as some would say, a little friendly cheating now and then. She had a creative spirit that thrived in crafts, and her joyous nature was infectious, highlighting her love for being around people and sharing moments of laughter. She also had a sweet-tooth and had a knack for hiding treats for herself, bringing a touch of playful mischief to her family.
Thelma's legacy will be cherished by her loving husband of 64 years, Roy Settle; and her daughters: Deborah (Doug) Oskins, Deedra Ankrom, Dianna Jenkins, Rebecca Arnold, Teresa (Dean) Betz, and Melissa Hobbs. She is also survived by her brother, Wayne (Martha) Cobb; 21 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandson, all of whom will hold precious memories of the time spent together.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Wilson and Elzie Wilson Cobb; three brothers; four sisters; and her grandchild, Lahoa Metzmeier. While she may have departed from this world, the love, laughter, and bread of life she shared will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.
Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, December 29, 2025 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). Visitation will continue on Tuesday, December 30, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Her Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, at the funeral home with burial to follow at Tunnel Hill Cemetery.
The family requests that contributions in Thelma’s memory be made to The Salvation Army.
