Steven Harris

With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well lived, we honor and remember Steven Harris, who passed away unexpectedly on August 14, 2026, in his beloved hometown of New Albany, Indiana. Born on April 24, 1947, also in New Albany, Steven’s remarkable journey of seventy-nine years leaves an enduring mark on all who knew and loved him.

Steven’s life story is rooted in a strong sense of place and family, beginning in the same community where he would later leave his indelible legacy. The son of Arthur E. Harris, Jr. and Helen Louise Harris, both of whom predeceased him, Steven grew up surrounded by love and values that shaped his honest, hardworking character. He went on to become a proud graduate of New Albany High School—an achievement he cherished—and continued his studies at both Marshall University and the University of Chicago, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. These formative years laid the foundation for a life dedicated to learning, leadership, and service.

A man of great faith, Steven was deeply involved with both Northside and Greenville Church, where he found community and spiritual purpose. At Greenville, Steven served faithfully as an elder, guiding and supporting fellow congregants through life’s joys and sorrows. His compassion was evident in his volunteer work: he lent his time and energy to the men’s breakfast and the Ladies’ luncheon for widows and served as a counselor for the church’s grief and bereavement group. Whether leading in faith or lending a comforting presence, Steven’s devotion to his church family was unwavering.

Professionally, Steven’s integrity and dedication shone throughout his career. He worked diligently as CFO/CEO for DePaul School, embracing each challenge with the same tenacity, wisdom, and fairness that defined every aspect of his life. His colleagues and those who benefited from his guidance remember him for his visionary leadership and tireless commitment to excellence.

Steven had a knack for cooking and took great pride in making every holiday meal special, including creating his own menus. He was also a lover of travel and enjoyed the hobby of model trains. His creativity, curiosity, and attention to detail brought joy to those around him and made every occasion a little more memorable.

Above all, family was at the heart of Steven’s world. He shared a loving marriage with his late wife, Tonia Gayle Harris, whose memory remained a source of strength and comfort to him. As a loyal husband, devoted father, dedicated grandfather, and steadfast friend, Steven gave his all to those he loved. He cherished time spent with his children—Kimberly Mytnik (Frederic Pin), Todd Harris, and Douglas Byrd—and delighted in the bonds he shared with his 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, his sister Marsha Slider (Robert) and brother Daniel Harris. Their lives, as well as those of many close friends, are richer for his kindness, support, and steadfast presence.

Steven’s honesty, loyalty, and industrious nature defined not only his relationships but every act of service, every friendship forged, and every family tradition honored. His sincerity and warm spirit leave a lasting legacy, carrying forward in the memories and hearts of those who were blessed to know him.

As we mourn the suddenness of Steven’s passing, we reflect on the lessons he quietly taught: to approach each day with earnest purpose, to lift one another in both faith and compassion, and to cherish family above all else. His absence is deeply felt, yet his example and love remain powerful sources of comfort and inspiration.

A celebration of life will be on Saturday October 17th, 10am, at Northside Christian Church, 4407 Charlestown Rd, New Albany, IN 47150.

Though he is no longer with us, Steven Harris’s legacy endures in the bonds he forged and the love he generously gave. He will be missed deeply, remembered always, and cherished forever.
