Listen to Obituary

Carroll “Sonny” Skaggs, 85, passed away peacefully (and on his own terms) on Thursday, September 17, 2026. Born October 21, 1940 in Horn Town, KY, Sonny was #5 of the nine children of Hubert and Hazel (Phillips) Skaggs. The family relocated to Louisville when Sonny was 4 years old. He graduated from Theodore Ahrens Trade School (Class of 1960), where he discovered his lifelong passion for printing. With 57 years in the industry, Sonny turned colleagues into friends, and organized many gatherings, including one scheduled for this month. On March 11, 1958, Sonny met the one and only love of his life, Mary Ann Catullo, who survives him. They became engaged Christmas Day 1959, and were married almost 66 years ago, on November 19, 1960.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents; sister Cumal Sandidge; brothers Burval and Howard Skaggs; sister-in-law Mildred Skaggs; and brothers-in-law Lee Sandidge, Byron Dishman, Ronnie DeWeese, Pat Yuncker, and Chuck Laux.

Sonny was known by many names. “Father” is survived by his children; Timi Lentz (Eric), James “Tony” Skaggs (Annie), and Tania Guelda (Art). “Pappy” is survived by grandchildren Meghan Lentz (Gary Lytle), Kelsey Goodin (Robby), Lauren Messex (Jarrod), Brooke Lentz (Matt Kremer), Sam Skaggs (Hannah Kennedy), Jake Skaggs, and Katie Skaggs; great-grandchildren Millie Lytle, Logan Goodin, Tatum Messex, Oakley Messex, and Bennett Goodin. “Sonny” is survived by cherished nephew Cheyenne Laux (Jessica); sisters Norma Dishman, Jody Yuncker, Judy Kornell (Kevin), Bonita DeWeese Clark (Martin), brother Larry Skaggs (Jackie), sister-in-law Cindy Laux, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and amazing neighbors. Dexter, his trusty canine companion, will miss crumb duty.

The family would like to especially thank the staff at Baptist Health Floyd Hospital for their exceptional care during his final days.

If a man’s wealth is calculated by the love for his family and friends, Sonny was rich beyond measure.
