Shirley Schwantes Collier, born on May 8, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully in Louisville, Kentucky, on December 23, 2025, after visiting with all of her loved ones. She was a dedicated educator, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of her students during her tenure at Stonestreet Elementary, Bates Elementary, and Thomas Jefferson Middle School.
Shirley was a proud graduate of Eastern High School, furthering her education with a master's degree from The University of Louisville in the field of education. Her commitment to teaching was paralleled by her passion for nurturing young minds, a testament to her generous spirit and her great sense of humor, which endeared her to all who knew her.
In her personal life, Shirley cherished the moments spent with her family, especially her 5 grandchildren. She found joy in activities such as watching Hallmark Christmas movies and QVC, as well as frequent visits to McDonald's for her favorite Diet Coke. Shirley also enjoyed being in the audience for her grandchildren's musical performances and her son's shows. Her devotion extended beyond her immediate family; she was known as a beloved member of Hurstbourne Christian Church, where she fostered friendships over her 20 years of membership.
Shirley is survived by her sons, Chris Collier and Greg Collier, her grandchildren, Madie, Macy, Cooper, Morgan, and Millie Collier, and her nephew, Michael Schwantes. She is preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Betty Schwantes, her brothers, Robert Schwantes and Jack Schwantes, and her daughter-in-law, Michele Collier.
Visitation will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home, East Louisville, located at 235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, KY 40243, on December 30, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and again on December 31, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Following the visitation on December 31, a Celebration of Life will take place at 2:00 PM. Lastly, friends and family are invited to gather at Resthaven Memorial Park, located at 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, KY 40218, on January 2, 2026, at 12:00 for final services.
Shirley Schwantes Collier will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, and unwavering love for her family and friends. Her legacy will continue through the lives she touched both personally and professionally.
