Savoy Efrem Thomas, a cherished soul whose vibrant life and gentle spirit touched many, passed away on June 7, 2026, in Louisville, Kentucky. Born on February 3, 1959, in Cleveland, Ohio, Savoy's journey was marked by dedication, warmth, and an unwavering love for those around him.
Savoy's career was as diverse as his personality, reflecting a man who embraced life's opportunities with enthusiasm and grace. Over the years, he contributed his talents and hard work to various organizations including the Chestnut Street YMCA, Norton Healthcare, UPS, Wage Works and Amazon. Each role he took on was met with commitment, embodying his resilient spirit and strong work ethic.
A proud veteran, Savoy served in the United States Army with distinction. He dedicated nearly four years as an Administrative Assistant. His honorable service earned him the Good Conduct Medal, along with Marksman and Expert badges for Rifle and Hand Grenade proficiency, testaments to his discipline and dedication.
Savoy graduated from John Adams High School in 1976 and then continued his education at Cuahoga College in 1982-1983, where he studied Occupational Therapy, underscored his desire to assist and uplift others. This passion carried into his relationships and daily interactions, where he was known for his fun nature and leadership, especially among youth. His love for basketball was not just a pastime but a chance to mentor teenagers, affectionately calling the game "Old School." His love of music found expression in his drum playing during his military tenure, and his appreciation for movement made him a great dancer.
His personal joys were as richly woven as his responsibilities. Coffee, made each morning with a sense of adventure, was a ritual he cherished. He delighted in familiar comforts such as Kentucky Fried Chicken, pizza, and bologna. His affection for Lucy Gray, his loving companion of 28 years, was profound; he lovingly called her "Lou Lou," cherishing every moment they spent together. Memories of these mornings and shared laughter, the quiet strength of their bond, remain treasures to those who knew them.
Savoy's curiosity and wonder about the world shone through his love of action movies and the National Geographic Channel, especially his fascination with the animals of Africa—a reflection of his eternal spirit of exploration and learning.
He leaves behind beloved family members who will carry his memory in their hearts: his loving companion, Lucy Gray, his sisters Jacqueline Thomas and Billie Thomas-Graham (husband John, Jr.); his niece, Inez Denice Kearse (husband Brandon); and great-nephews Keion, Korey, Anointed, and Chosen. The void left by his passing is softened by the enduring love of his family and friends, and by the legacy of kindness and joy he bestowed upon them all.
Savoy was preceded in death by his mother, Johnnie Mae Thomas, his father, James F. Thomas, and his brother, Ricky Thomas. Their memories live on in the stories and the lives he touched so deeply.
The community is invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of Savoy’s life at the Mosaic United Methodist Church in Louisville, Kentucky, located at 8008 Saint Andrews Church Road. Visitation will be held on June 17, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. The following day, June 18, 2026, a graveside service will take place at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery in Fort Knox, starting at 9:30 a.m.
