Sarah Elizabeth Koenig

August 19, 1981 — March 20, 2024

Sarah Elizabeth Koenig, 42, of Jeffersonville, IN, passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

Born August 19, 1981, she was the daughter of Steve and Laura Koenig. Sarah graduated from Providence High School in 1999 and furthered her education at Hanover College earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 2003. She also sought additional studies at Ohio University, graduating in 2005, earning a Masters of Arts Degree. She later pursued studies at Bellarmine University earning a Masters Degree in Business Administration in 2015.

Most recently she was employed as an Operations Manager for The Hive (In-House Marketing Agency) at Humana based in Louisville, Kentucky. Previously, (2007-2016) Sarah was a Manager for Production Braille Pre-Production at American Printing House For the Blind.

Sarah was an avid reader. She especially enjoyed reading Fantasy. Two of her favorite books were Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. She was fond of poetry. She read the works of many poets. Edgar Allen Poe and Herman Melville were her favorites.

She highly valued traveling. On a trip to Europe she explored the countries of France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Rome. She returned a year later to Munich, Germany to experience Oktoberfest.

From a young age she had enjoyed roller skating. In her 20's she skated with the Derby City Rollergirls.

She loved spending time with her beloved dog, Wittelsbach, nicknamed Vittles.

She was born to parents, Steven C. Koenig and Laura A .(Brumleve) Koenig of New Albany, IN. She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Norman Joseph & Evelyn Jane Brumleve and William Hudson Koenig & Martha Eleanor Koenig. Sarah's siblings include, Daniel Christopher Koenig (Kevin) of Louisville,KY, and Joseph Victor Koenig of Lanesville, IN. Sarah was proud when asked to be the godmother to her cousin, now her godson, Jacob Thomas Box.

Sarah was blessed with her life-long friend, Maria Brodfehrer. Maria was by her side throughout the illness and with her as she took her last breath. Joey Box, (Sarah's cousin), always brought laughter and a smile to her face. She enjoyed his visits.

Sarah was 40 years old when she was diagnosed with an inoperable brain cancer, an astrocytoma. She was so brave and strong as she fought the tumor. She was cared for in her home for 2 and ½ years. At the end of this time the pain became so severe, Hospice sent her to Scott Memorial Hospital, in Scottsburg, IN. She died a week later, peacefully, free of pain. The family wishes to thank Hospice of Southern IN. Sarah's nurse was Krista Couch. Krista and Sarah connected the first time they met. Sarah could talk to her about the "hard things". She went beyond her duties and took care of us both. We also want to acknowledge Sarah's oncologist, Donald Miller MD (Brown Cancer Center). Never have we met a kinder man. And finally, the people that work at Scott Memorial Hospital. It is by far the best hospital we have ever experienced. Thank you, Hospice of Southern Indiana, for getting Sarah admitted. Dr. Skip was an amazing doctor and individual. The first night, he stayed with Sarah six hours adjusting her medications to relieve her pain. The nursing staff (4th wing) was so compassionate. We have never seen such wonderful patient care.

The legacy of Sarah's generosity and kindness will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know her. We love you. We miss you. We celebrate your life!

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider a contribution to Episcopal Relief & Development's Gifts for Life. Sarah enjoyed goats. She and her brothers even did ''yoga with the goats". In Nicaragua goats are helpful to the village farmer. A goat gives sustainability to the farmer. Goats are hardy, reproduce quickly and can be raised in many climates to produce stable items such as milk, cheese and manure for farming. A donation of $80.00 buys one goat. There are other animal gifts and sustainable systems. Any amount will be appreciated. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). Her Memorial Service will be at 12:00 pm on Saturday, at the funeral home with burial to follow at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville. Cremation was chosen following Sarah's wishes.
