Samuel N. Hughes "Sammy", 58 of Louisville, passed away on May 1, 2026. Born October 6, 1967, he was a lifelong Louisvillian.
Sammy was the kind of person you could count on - plain and simple. He took great pride in being dependable, whether it meant showing up for work, helping family, answering a call or being there when someone needed him. If Sammy said he'd be there, he was there - and more often than not, he was early. So, don't be late yourself or he would let you know about it.
He was a dedicated employee of Birkhead Heating and Air, where his dependability and steady work ethic earned him the respect of those around him. His family is deeply grateful for the support, kindness and compassion shown by Birkhead during this time.
Sammy loved his sports and wore his loyalty proudly. A lifelong fan of the Louisville Cardinals basketball team, he celebrated the highs, endured the lows and when things were going well, made sure everyone around him knew it. His devotion to the Pittsburgh Steelers was just as steady - or, at least it was when they were winning, which, as he would admit, was not nearly often enough.
Sammy was known for having a short wick and a sharp tongue. But beneath the rough edge was a big-hearted man - the kind of teddy bear who would help anyone without hesitation, often giving more of himself than people ever knew.
Sammy was never short on good friends, which says a lot about the kind of person he was. In many ways, the friendships Sammy kept were a reflection of how he lived - loyal, dependable and always showing up for the people who mattered. Thank you to Mike Heron who remained a steady and supportive presence in his life especially when it mattered most.
Sammy built his life around family, friendships and the people he cared about most. He is survived by his loving fiancé and companion, Missy Williams, and six beloved nieces and nephews: Missi (Troy), Jimmie (Karrie), Billy, Niki (Larry), Amanda (Mike), Steve (Michelle) as well as his faithful dogs, Bella & Rosie, who were constant companions and brought him daily joy. He is also survived by his brothers, Max and Stephen Hughes, as well as many Great-Nieces & Nephews who he thought very fondly of.
He was preceded in death by his parents Maxie & Lula Mae Hughes, his loving brother, Billy Hughes; his nurturing sister-in-law Marty Hughes and his cherished dog Rodie.
Throughout his lifetime, Sammy came to the aid of many others, often quietly and without any desire for recognition. Sammy will be remembered for his loyalty, dependability and the meaningful ways he showed up for others throughout his life.
