Russell Eugene Calkins, Jr.

Russell Eugene Calkins, Jr., 80, of New Albany, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, August 26, 2017. Russ was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, rising to the rank of E-8 before his retirement. After serving in the Vietnam War, he earned 2 Purple Hearts, the Silver Star, and many other awards for his conduct and service. Russ also retired from Rudd Construction after over 15 years of employment. He enjoyed IU basketball and Indianapolis Colts football, but his true passion was playing golf.

Russ was born on August 27, 1936, to the late Russell E. Calkins, Sr., and Ruth B. (Gruber) Calkins. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis (Bocard) Calkins; brother, Lawrence "LA" Calkins; and sisters, Blanche Jerrell and Adalou Scott.

He is survived by his sons, Doug Calkins and his wife Pamela, Greg Calkins-Hunt, and Gary Calkins; sister, Joyce Schleter; grandson, Chris Calkins; and many nieces, nephews, and relatives; his "girls", Jamie Schilmiller and Kelly Smith; and beloved neighbors.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 29, 2017, at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). His Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home with entombment to follow at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park in New Albany.
