Robert Leo Schellenberg, 89, of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2019, at Sellersburg Healthcare Center after a short stay. Robert (Bob) grew up in Perry County, graduated from New Albany High School, and lived most of his life in Floyds Knobs. He was a member of St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church and retired from W.R. Grace.
Bob served in the U. S. Army from 1951 to 1953 and was in the Korean War. He was a Corporal upon ending his term with the Army. Bob, along with family members, built a home in Floyds Knobs and lived there for over six decades. He enjoyed taking care of his huge yard, planting and taking care of the garden, hunting, fishing, and softball, and was an avid golfer. He spent many of his days supporting his children in sporting and musical events. His later years included traveling and vacationing with his wife, Pat, in their RV.
He was a strong leader to his family and a loyal friend with a fun and kind-hearted personality. Bob was respected and loved by many in the community. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed.
On January 17, 1930, Bob was born in Leopold, Indiana, to the late Herbert and Anna (Krieg) Schellenberg. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Patricia Ann (Striegel) Schellenberg; sister, LaVonne Whitlow; son, Danny Joe Schellenberg; infant daughter, Mary Jane Schellenberg; daughter-in-law, Carol (Gerringer) Schellenberg; grandchildren, Brandon Gerringer, Marci (Schellenberg) Goodman, and Connor Schellenberg; and great-grandchild, Carol Lynn Triplett.
Bob is survived by his loving children, Tom (Becky) Schellenberg, Jerry Schellenberg, Alma (Danny) Hammond, JoAnn (Doug) Cunningham, Larry (Raven) Schellenberg, and John (Megan) Schellenberg; 17 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, February 4, 2019, at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) and on Tuesday after 9:00 a.m. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church (5719 St. Mary's Road, Floyds Knobs) with burial and military honors to follow in the church cemetery.
