Rita Mary (Kiesler) Hagan

Rita Mary (Kiesler) Hagan, 92, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children, and went to be with the Lord on December 15, 2025. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, on November 12, 1933, she was the second of six children born to James Kiesler and Francis (Kreinbrink) Kiesler.

Rita's life was marked by profound love and devotion. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Lamont Leo Hagan; her son, Keith Edward Hagan; and her granddaughters, Josey Hagan and Cora Lewis. She is survived by her siblings, Robert Kiesler (Kathy) and Patricia Jones, while her brothers James, David, and Herman Kiesler have also preceded her in death.

Rita is lovingly remembered by her three children: Diane Lewis (Brian), Patrick Hagan (Christine), and Brian Hagan (Tracy). She found immense joy and purpose as a proud and devoted grandmother to eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Her family recounts her as a loving, generous, wise, and thoughtful matriarch, always placing the needs of others before her own.

Her deep and enduring devotion to her husband Lamont was evident throughout their marriage, as they built a life together centered on family, faith, and hard work. An entrepreneur at heart, Rita successfully started multiple small businesses in the Floyds Knobs area. Her creative spirit shone through in her love for crafts and silk flower arrangements. She owned Rita's Craft and Flowers, which she operated out of their Floyds Knobs farmhouse, and also established the Fireside Northwood Stove Company in downtown Floyds Knobs. Moreover, she co-founded the Christmas in the Country Bazaar, showcasing her passion for community and creativity.

Rita’s skills extended beyond entrepreneurship; she was an accomplished seamstress, lovingly making clothes and costumes for her children and grandchildren. Her involvement in the local Homemakers group, along with her enjoyment of square dancing and playing bridge, characterized her vibrant social life. Rita cherished spending winters in Fort Myers, Florida, where she created lasting memories with her loved ones.

Rita's wish was to be cremated. A reception of family and friends will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 18, 2025 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) and continue on Friday after 10:00 a.m. A memorial service celebrating Rita's life will commence at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. 

Rita’s legacy of love, generosity, creativity, and devotion to family will forever resonate with all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her. The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to The Historic Villages of Silvercrest and St. Croix Hospice for the compassionate care provided to Rita in her final days. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to St. Croix Hospice (2916 Peach Blossom Drive, Suite 106, Jeffersonville, IN  47130).
