Listen to Obituary

Richard Hampton Scurlock Jr., lovingly known as “Poppy,” passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2026, peacefully surrounded by his family following complications from multiple strokes.

Richard graduated from Portsmouth High School and The Ohio State University, where he majored in zoology and was a proud member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. A lifelong Buckeye, he remained a dedicated alumnus and carried that pride with him throughout his life. He was also active in the Jaycees, reflecting his commitment to community and service.

Richard built a successful career in medical device sales, dedicating his professional life to helping and healing others. Those who knew him best, however, understand that his greatest work (impact) was done outside of his career-in the way he loved, guided and showed up for his family and friends.

He was an involved, hands-on father and a true family man in every sense of the word. Whether he was coaching soccer, volunteering at school, cheering from the pool deck at swim meets or simply spending time with his children, he was always present. Music was part of how he connected with others and many of his favorite memories were made alongside family at the piano, attending concerts, or enjoying music together. Richard even did his best physical therapy workouts to the tune of The Ohio State fight song. He had a gift for teaching, sharing lessons that ranged from chemistry and science to rock collecting, hunting and fishing. He created experiences, passed down knowledge, and built a foundation of love and curiosity that will live on for generations.

As “Poppy,” his legacy only grew. He was deeply involved in the lives of his grandchildren, showing them the same patience, joy and unwavering love that defined him as a father. He took immense pride in his family and found his greatest happiness in being surrounded by them.

Richard was a proud resident of Douglass Hills, where he raised his children and remained rooted as his family grew. He cared deeply about his community and took great pride in the life and memories built there. He never met a stranger. His warmth, kindness and genuine spirit drew people in, and his love extended not only to those around him but to all of God’s creatures. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle whose presence made people feel seen, valued and at home.

He was preceded in death by his parents Dr. Richard H. Scurlock Sr. and Mary Scurlock; and his sister, Susan Bowman.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Robin Scurlock (married August 11, 1973); his children, Hampton Scurlock (Misty), Justin Scurlock (Allyson), and Paige Williams (Raleigh); his cherished grandchildren, Bella, Piper, Reagan, Tripp, Rogan and Dylan; his siblings, Drs. Steve Scurlock (Debra), David Scurlock (Mary), Jennifer Young (Olen Ackman), Mark Scurlock; and his brother-in-law, Tim Bowman; along with a large extended family who will miss him dearly.

A Memorial Service will be held at Middletown Christian Church 500 Waterson Trail, Louisville, KY 40243 on Saturday, May 9th, 2026 at 1:00 PM followed by lunch and a celebration of his full and happy life.

In honor of his lifelong love for The Ohio State University and the Douglass Hills community he cherished, a Buckeye tree will be planted at Warren Walker Park in Douglass Hills. The tree dedication will follow the services at 4:00pm at Warren Walker Park. His legacy will continue to stand strong and grow for generations-rooted in love, family, and community.
