Richard W. Oller, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and cherished member of the Louisville community, passed away peacefully on his 74th birthday, August 17, 2026, in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.
Born on August 17, 1952, in Louisville, Richard’s life was marked by steadfast dedication to his family, country, and friends. He graduated from Stuart High School in 1973, taking his first steps into adulthood with the same determination that would characterize the rest of his life. He soon pursued further education in the Navy at IDT School in Portsmouth, Virginia, before attending George Washington University. Richard’s commitment to service continued as he attended field med school at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, preparing him for a remarkable career in military medicine.
In June of 1973, Richard answered a higher calling and enlisted in the United States Navy and Marine Corps, serving with distinction as a Hospital Corpsman, HM1 AWF. His two decades of service, spanning from 1973 to his retirement in 1993, were spent caring for fellow service members in medical units. Richard’s dedication, skill, and compassion left an indelible mark on all who served alongside him.
Following his honorable military career, Richard continued to impact lives while working as a truck driver for the United States Postal Service, always exemplifying reliability and steadfastness. Throughout his professional journey, he made lifelong friends and maintained a sense of duty and commitment that inspired those around him.
Richard was a proud member and past secretary of the Fleet Reserve Association, Derby Branch 177, finding camaraderie among fellow veterans and continuing a tradition of service even in civilian life.
Family was the beating heart of Richard’s world. He is survived by his beloved wife, Pamela Oller; his cherished children, daughter Brandy Daugherty (John) and son Richard Oller (Amber); and his adored grandchildren, Audrey Daugherty and Kalvin Oller. Richard found profound joy and pride in his role as “Uber Grandpa,” doting on his grandchildren and embracing every opportunity to teach, guide, and love them. His relationships with his five siblings—those surviving—added another dimension of support and closeness throughout his life.
Richard’s legacy is further illuminated by his innate ability to fix anything, a gift that made him the go-to person for building and tinkering on countless projects. His mechanical talents extended to his enjoyment of working on cars, a hobby that combined his technical prowess with a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.
Those who knew Richard will fondly remember his deep affection for his dogs, granddogs, and even his grandturtle, reflecting his generous spirit and capacity for love beyond measure. Memories of shared laughter, gentle wisdom, and quiet acts of kindness will echo in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Richard was predeceased by his father, James Oller; his mother, Evelyn Oller; his step-mother, Mary Rose Oller; and three siblings, whose memories he honored throughout his life.
