Richard Allen "Dick" Aemmer

Richard Allen “Dick” Aemmer, 83, passed peacefully on Monday, September 21st, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at his home.

Dick was born on September 9th, 1943 to William and Helen Aemmer (Devore). He was the 5th born of their 9 children. He attended New Albany High School. After graduating high school, he joined the National Guard and held jobs at Jeffersonville Boat & Machine Company, Fall City Brewing, and eventually retired from Stumler Electric. As was his hardworking nature, he continued to work various jobs up until his 70s. A true jack of all trades and mechanic, there weren’t many things that he couldn’t do.

While living in his childhood home, he met Kathleen “Kathy” (Bowman), who eventually became his wife and steadfast companion of 60 years. They spent their years together raising their 3 children and building their home on Scottsville road where they lived for 36 years. They did everything together, some of which included cooking, dancing, gardening, vacationing at the beach, camping, going to “the boat,” and playing their favorite games like Tripoli and Farkle.

Dick was a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church for 14 years and St. Mary’s of the Knobs Catholic Church for over 30 years where he was well known for frying fish & chicken for many events. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Floyds Knobs, Conservation Club, and the American Legion, Post 28. He was a lover of many things. He loved to fish, garden, sunbathe with a beer, watch old westerns, cook, sing, play pull tabs, spend time at the Legion, and cheer on any IU team. He enjoyed carrying out his family’s legacy and contributing to events like the annual Aemmer Soup Cook.

Dick was known as Papa or Dicky to those closest to him and was most proud of his role as grandpa and great grandpa. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Helen Aemmer, his brothers Bill and Tony Aemmer, his sister Barbara “Sis” Black (Aemmer), and his nephew Mark Aemmer.

Dick’s legacy of love and laughter will continue on through his wife Kathy, his children Todd (Judy), Teresa (Doug) Sidebottom, and Tracy (Scott) Diers, his adoring grandchildren Brandon (Haley) Sidebottom, Katie (Kyle) Just, Matthew Sidebottom, Aaron Aemmer, Kylie (Aaron) Hartpence, Nick Aemmer, Nan Book, Kevin (Mia) Diers, Christian (Morgan) Diers, Jo Book, Julia Book, and Cassie Diers, and the lights of his life, his great grandchildren, Kohen, Warren, Dallas, and Aspen.

Visitation will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany Indiana, 47150, 2:00pm to 8:00pm, on September 25th. A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s of the Knobs Catholic Church, 5719 St Marys Rd, Floyds Knobs, IN 47119, at 10 am on September 26th with a burial to follow at Kraft Graceland Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial donations to St. Croix Hospice or St. Mary’s of the Knobs Catholic School.
