Raymond Louis Lueke, 88, of Borden, Indiana, passed away on Monday, May 16, 2016. He was born on April 15, 1928, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Andrew and Mary Margaret (Brenzel) Lueke.
He was a United States Air Force veteran and a commercial airline pilot. He retired as a captain for Continental Airlines after thirty-three years of service. He was a member of St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church in Floyds Knobs, Indiana.
Raymond was raised on his family farm where he learned the value of hard work and the importance of family. He was a gentle giant of a man, an eternal optimist who enjoyed traveling, cars, motorcycles, and spending time with friends and family. He was a devoted father and husband, who despite the demands of being an airline pilot was a guiding force in his children's life.
Raymond is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rita (Hardt) Lueke; children, Rose Marie Lueke, Gregory Lueke (Stacey), Teresa Varenhorst (Mark), and Steven Lueke (Cheryll Ann); sisters, Mary Dienes Flood, Sr. Frances Lueke, R.S.M., and Margaret Scheurich (Richard); grandchildren, Merideth, Melissa, Grey, Robby, Melanie, and Grace; and great-grandchildren, Kaidyn, Madison, Kadyn, Teagan, Aurelia, and Kesley. He was preceded in death by his son, Carl Lueke; and siblings, Frederick, James, John, and William Lueke.
Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, May 20, 2016, at Newcomer Funeral Home (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday in the chapel at St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church (5719 St. Mary's Road, Floyds Knobs, Indiana 47119) with burial and military honors to follow in the church cemetery.
