Raoul Franco Monteiro

June 7, 1938 — May 21, 2020

Raoul Franco (Frank) Monteiro was born June 7, 1938.

He attended Hempstead High School where he lettered in basketball playing four years on the varsity squad under coach John Mills. He was the MVP of the 1956 Nassau County HS Champion Hempstead Tigers scoring 35 points in the championship game. He was recruited by Butch Van Breda Kolff to play at Hofstra University on a basketball scholarship but declined in order to support his mother and stepfather by working several jobs.

In 1958 he began a 33 year career in the Post Office as a letter carrier at the East Meadow branch. He married Patricia Marie Baretti in 1958. He started R. Monteiro Landscaping in 1960, the same year his first child John (wife Kathy) was born. Two more children followed: Gabrielle (husband Danny) in 1962 and Matthew (wife Katie) in 1974. He was an avid small game hunter and enjoyed playing men's league basketball and softball into his forties. In his retirement he enjoyed woodworking and in particular furniture making. His close friends knew him as 'Paco'.

He passed away on May 21 2020 after a brief hospitalization due to complications from Covid-19. He is survived by nine grandchildren and four great-granchildren.
