Phyllis Payne

Phyllis Payne, born on December 6, 1945, in Clarksville, Indiana, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026, in New Albany, Indiana. Her life, spanning 80 years, was marked by unwavering dedication to her community, and the values she held dear.

Phyllis was a proud graduate of Clarksville High School, an accomplishment she cherished and shared fondly with those close to her heart. Her commitment to serving others shaped her professional path; for over 35 years, she worked diligently as a social worker for New Albany – Floyd County. Through her tireless service, Phyllis touched countless lives, offering support, guidance, and compassion to individuals and families in need.

Known for her hardworking spirit, straightforward nature, and honesty, Phyllis built a legacy rooted in integrity. Her genuine approach to life and work earned her the trust and respect of colleagues, friends, and all who knew her.

Outside of her vocation, Phyllis found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She cherished her moments spent going on walks, accompanied by the calming embrace of nature. A lover of books, she often found solace and inspiration while reading, ever eager to learn and explore worlds both real and imagined.

Phyllis is survived by her sons, Jimmy Payne (Zoraida Delgado Payne) and Mike Payne, and her granddaughter, Lissette Payne. She is remembered by her brother, Don Coomer (Barbara Coomer), and her nephews, Stephen and Chris Coomer. Her memory is also honored by many extended family, friends and the local community who were fortunate to know her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Coomer and Nina Coomer. Their influence played a significant role in shaping the person Phyllis became, and she often spoke of them with warmth and gratitude.

Family and friends are invited to honor Phyllis’s life during a visitation on Friday, August 21, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southern Indiana (3309 Ballard Ln, New Albany, IN 47150). A funeral service will follow at the same location beginning at 1:00 p.m.
