Paul Spencer

October 8, 1944 — September 3, 2021

Paul Spencer, 76 years old, passed away September 3, 2021, surrounded by the love of his many friends and family. Born on Grapevine Creek near Chavies, KY on October 8, 1944, Paul was the son of Lexie and Rose (Morgan) Spencer. He would later recount stories from his childhood growing up on the banks of the Middle Fork of the Kentucky River near Hoskinston, KY in his book Coal Bank Hollow: Growin' Up in Eastern Kentucky. As a teenager, his family relocated to Southern Indiana, eventually settling on a farm just outside of Hardinsburg, IN. After graduating from Hardinsburg High School in 1962, he attended Indiana State University in Terre Haute for 2 years on academic scholarship. He would eventually complete a Bachelors of Liberal Arts degree from the University of Louisville in 1976. In 1967, he was drafted into the United States Army. Before his induction, he met his future bride and wife of 52 years, Phyllis Ann Wildman at the Chat-n-Snak in Paoli, IN. After his honorable discharge from the Army, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant, he and Phyllis were married on May 23, 1969 at the church of Christ in Orleans, IN. They began their married life living in Hardinsburg, Indiana, then Sellersburg, eventually settling in Louisville, KY where they raised three sons, Justin David, Joseph Blaine, and Jason Paul. Employed by the United States Postal Service in 1969, where he was affectionately known by his co-workers as "Stump", as a city letter carrier until his retirement in 2001, he was well-known on his routes in the St. Matthews, Crescent Hill, and Butchertown neighborhoods of Louisville. He was a devout Christian who was a faithful member, and later served as a deacon, at the churches of Christ on Wendell Ave. and Taylorsville Rd. in Louisville. Known for his outgoing personality and quick wit, Paul revelled in regaling any and all with his songs, poems, jokes, and stories. Paul is moving on to the next life, joining his parents, Lexie and Rose (Morgan) Spencer, his parents-in-law, William and Mary (Cannon) Wildman, and his three brothers, Lowell Spencer, Donald Spencer, and Gary Spencer.

Paul leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Phyllis Ann Wildman Spencer; his sister, Barbara (Donald) Robinson; sisters-in-law, Almyra Spencer, Nancy Spencer and Kim Spencer; his sons, Justin (Alissa), Joseph (Jessica), Jason (Amy); former daughter-in-law, Robyn Buchanan Spencer; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Luke) Erlandson, William (Tosin Sanusi) Spencer, Dylan Spencer, Megan (Christian) Rickey, Sloane Spencer, Joseph Dauk, Josh Dauk, Ashley (Ricky) Roewe; and great-grandchildren, Rory Erlandson, Ruby Erlandson, and Freddy Roewe; and countless nieces, nephews and cousins.
