Pastor Jerry D. Higgs, born March 8, 1939, went to sleep in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 12, 2026, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family. A life defined by faith, compassion, and laughter now rests in peace, leaving behind cherished memories and an enduring legacy among all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Jerry’s earthly journey was marked by unwavering devotion to his family and faith. He served at and ultimately retired from New Albany Seventh-day Adventist Church, in 2008 after decades of spreading kindness, wisdom, and comfort. His ministry was not just a vocation, but a calling he answered with humility, courage, and boundless love for others. Jerry led by both faith and example; his actions illuminating the path for those around him.
Early in his life, Jerry demonstrated a willingness to serve his country with pride through his brief service in the United States Air Force. In every role, whether in his pastoral duties or his time in uniform, Jerry carried himself with dignity, honesty, and an infectious sense of humor.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Patricia “Patti” Ann Higgs, whose partnership and unwavering support shaped so much of Jerry’s happiness. Their enduring love was both an inspiration and a source of strength to their family.
As a loyal husband and devoted father, Jerry leaves behind his son, Timothy Dwayne Higgs, and daughters Cindee Leigh Higgs (Robert) and Heidi C.A Ruckle (Brent). He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Philip L. Higgs, whose memory Jerry carried with him always.
Pastor Jerry’s pride and joy shone brightest when he spoke of his grandchildren: Rachael M. Seth (Matthew), Dustin L. Higgs (Shannon), Jason M. Higgs (Melody), Hilary L. Higgs (Joe), Robert A. Lamb, Golda L. Ruckle (Aden), Lindsey L. Higgs, Samuel H. Lamb, Lydia D.K. Ruckle, Emma C.R. Ruckle, Elijah D.M. Ruckle, and Patrick S. Lamb. He was also a loving great-grandfather—a title he wore with immense pride as he watched his family grow and thrive, their joys reflected in his smile.
Jerry was the beloved son of Hazel Mae Hurt and Valtie Higgs, who preceded him in death, as well as a steadfast friend and confidant to many. To all who crossed his path, Jerry never met a stranger; instead, he grew his circle of love through genuine connection, a gentle handshake, or the sparkle of mischief in his eyes.
He relished life’s simple pleasures—fishing, travel, sharing a good meal (prepared by his beloved wife Patti), and chatting on the phone with friends old and new. Jerry delighted in improvisation and laughter, quick with a practical joke. One cherished memory endures: during a shopping trip with Patti, he settled quietly on a bench beside a row of mannequins and startled passersby with a cheerful hello, his hearty laugh echoing in the store and in the hearts of those fortunate enough to witness it.
Compassionate and honest, fun-loving yet deeply anchored in his beliefs, Jerry touched lives not just within the church, but throughout his community. His legacy is one of hope, humor, and unwavering faith—gifts that will continue to comfort and inspire those who loved him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on August 1, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Louisville First Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2988 Newburg Rd, Louisville, KY 40205.
