Olan Wallace "Al" Landon, 93, of Louisville, passed away on July 27, 2016. Al was born in Ponca City, Oklahoma on July 24, 1923 to the late Daniel and Mabel Landon. He joined the Navy in 1942 and served in the Asiatic Pacific on the USS Millacoma during World War II. He met his future wife, Helga Stechert, in Philadelphia during his Navy service. They moved to Oakland, California when he left the service. Al worked for the Richmond City Police Department for six years, then went to work as a Special Agent for Standard Oil Company. He was transferred to southern California for four years, then to Kentucky in 1966, responsible for Security operations east of the Mississippi. Following his retirement from Standard Oil in 1981 he took up beekeeping. He was active in the Kentucky Beekeeping Association, and held several offices in that regard. He retired from beekeeping in 2007.
Al is survived by his wife of 70 years, Helga Stechert Landon; four children, Daniel Landon (Nancy) of Loveland, OH, Karen Zegart (Jerry) of Prospect, KY, Mark Landon of Porterville, CA, and Joanne Overcash (Wendell) of Goshen, KY; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Al was the oldest of nine siblings, of which three sisters still reside in California, one in North Carolina.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, July 30, 2016 at Newcomer Funeral Home - East Chapel (235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, KY 40243) with visitation from 9:00 am until time of service. Burial with military honors will follow at Cave Hill Cemetery.
