Norman Leo Miller, affectionately known as Norm, was born on January 25, 1926, in Floyds Knobs, Indiana. He embarked on a remarkable journey through life, leaving an indelible mark on all those who had the privilege to know him. He passed away peacefully on December 30, 2025, in Greenville, Indiana, surrounded by his beloved family, a testament to the love and warmth he cultivated throughout his 99 years.
Norm was a proud graduate of New Albany High School, completing the Class of 1943, and continued his education at Indiana University Bloomington, where he earned his bachelor's degree in business in 1949. His dedication to his studies and strong work ethic led him to a fulfilling career at Porter Paints, where he worked diligently for 30 years until his retirement. Norm was also an active member of the Delta Chi Fraternity during his college years, fostering enduring friendships that would last a lifetime.
His commitment to service extended beyond his professional endeavors. During World War II, Norm was drafted into the military in April 1944, serving as an Army Technical Sergeant in the 1410th Engineer Base Depot Group in central Europe. He was awarded numerous honors, including the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon and a Theater Ribbon with a Bronze Star for his exceptional service. His involvement with the American Legion Lodge Post 28 allowed him to both receive and provide support to fellow veterans, showcasing his dedication to his country and community.
A devoted husband for 51 years to Jean Hochmeister Miller, who is now deceased, Norm exemplified the virtues of compassion, loyalty, and love. Together, they shared a life filled with memories. Norm's milestones, and accomplishments, include the celebration of his 99th birthday last year, surrounded by family and friends. His experiences enriched his life, from traveling through Germany to exploring the beautiful landscapes of Alaska. He had a passion for golf, antique collecting, and refinishing furniture, hobbies that brought him joy and fulfillment.
Norm was not only a loving husband but also a compassionate father to his son, Brad Alan (Marsha) Miller, and daughter, Kathy Sue (Dale) Goodwin. He held a special place in the lives of his grandchildren—Norman S. (Becki) Miller, Jessica A. Miller, Gregory L. (Rachel) Miller, D. Patrick Miller, Donald Reed, Kristina Reed—as well as step-grandsons Travis Cook and Jeremy (Rebecca) Cook. He cherished his siblings and extended family, including brother-in-law Arthur Best, as well as nieces Artis (Best) Wells, Janice (Guthrie) Roehm, and Jan (Henry) Eberle-Kanui, and nephew Mike (Priscilla) Eberle,12 great-grandchildren, and his loving caregivers, David and Vickie Poynter, and Lexie Keith.
As a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Norm devoted his time and skills to volunteer work, contributing to various initiatives such as the "Hour of Power" soup kitchen and serving on the Ceaser Foundation Board. His steadfast commitment to helping others defined his character and impact on the community.
Norm is preceded in death by his mother, Ethel Blanche Miller; father, Ezra Howard Miller; twin sister, Norma Lee Best; sister, Pauline Roehm; great-grandson, Nicholas Owen Downs; brother-in-law, Harold Eberle; sister-in-law, Mary Eberle; nephew, Jason Roehm; and niece, Judy Eberle.
His legacy will continue to shine through the lives he touched and the love he shared. Visitation for Norm will take place on January 8, 2026, from 11 AM to 1 PM, followed by a funeral service at 1 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southern Indiana, located in New Albany, IN, 3309 Ballard Lane, 47150.
The life of Norman Leo Miller serves as a beautiful reminder of the power of love, the importance of service, and the enduring bonds of family. He will be missed dearly, yet his spirit will remain alive in the hearts of all who knew him.
