Nona Valera (Casey) May

July 14, 1937 — September 25, 2021

Nona Valera (Casey) May, born June 14, 1937, age 84, went home to her Heavenly Father on the morning of September 25, 2021, being cared for by her children.

Nona was known for her readily available supply of hugs, candy, and chocolate milk and her devotion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She exemplified her faith through her many acts of service for her Sisters and Brothers in the LDS Church, including teaching classes and visiting those in need. Her dedication served her well when, as a single mother at the age of 55 in 1993, she completed an Associate's degree in Accounting with a technical certificate in Business Management. After the graduation, she enjoyed knowing her work in the offices of St. Elizabeth's Regional Maternity Center touched the lives of so many children and young mothers. Her children and grandchildren were her true joy in life. She loved all of them fiercely and completely, ending almost every phone call with "I love you, love you, love you." She was resilient during times of hardship, graceful under pressure, sometimes irreverent, and stronger than most. We will all miss her laughter, impromptu country song performances, quick wit, and famous yeast rolls. Rest peacefully, Mom. We love you, love you, love you.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emery Harold Casey and Geneva Pearl (Bower) Casey; and her brothers, Vernice Lee Casey, Palmer Harold Casey (Bonnie), Roger Leroy Casey (Gloria), Dale Morton Casey (Norma), Russell Edward Casey (Charlotte), George Darrell Casey (Linda), Jerry Coleman Porter, and Floyd Lynn Porter.

She is survived by brothers, Robert Eugene Casey (Sherry) and Perry Ray Porter (Sandy); her sister-in-love, Wyona Hall; her nine children, Lavona S. Jackson (Ronald), Ramona M. Wald (Steven), Victoria M. Valentine (Steven), Lorna K. May (Cathy), Jasper N. May III, April M. Mintkenbaugh (Mark), Nona Michelle Lowe (David), Michael A. May, and Gilda G. Snow; her 23 grandchildren, Kristina, Bryan (Angela), Brad (Janna), Eric (Joanna), Renee (Jeff), Angela, Crystal (Nathan), Rae, Jason (Juno), Amber (Christian), Désirée (Luke), Kelsey, Katharine, Tiffany, Chris (Kim), Justin (Tara), Casey (Rylee), Ryan, Rose (John), Hannah (Brandon), Nicholas, Courtney, and Daniel; and her 23 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 8, 2021, at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). Visitation will continue on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and her Funeral Service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home with burial to follow at Daisy Hill Cemetery in Borden, Indiana.

The family requests that contributions in Nona's memory be made to St. Elizabeth Catholic Charities (702 E Market St., New Albany, IN) or the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America (375 Kings Hwy North, Cherry Hill, New Jersey 08034).
