Nelson "Rock" Willis, Jr., was one of four children to the union of the late Rev. Nelson and Mary Susan Willis, Sr. of Louisville, KY on September 22, 1929. He departed this life on Thursday, December 14, 2017 in his home. He was a graduate of Central High School class of 1947 1/2. Nelson's love and kindness will be remembered by many friends, loved ones and family.
Nelson accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age and served faithfully following his father, while he served as Pastor of Blue Springs and 1st Baptist Church in Horse Cave, Kentucky, Elk Creek Church in Pee Wee Valley, Eastern Star and the organizations of Mount Moriah Baptist Church.
He spent several years in the military as a Paratrooper in the United States Army. Nelson was employed at Naval Ordinance as an engineer in the weapons division for 44 years. While employed at Naval Ordinance he received many awards for his outstanding service.
Nelson loved to cook and entertain with his family and friends. He enjoyed shooting pool, playing cards and traveling with his fiancée, the late Sally Williams and is most remembered by his famous barbecue ribs and special sauce.
He was preceded in death by his fiancé, Sally Williams of 33 years and siblings, Alva, Daniel and Robert Willis.
Nelson is survived by his step children, Karen Williams Huff (Jeffrey) and Charles Williams; nieces; nephews and close friends.
Visitation will be Thursday, December 21, 2017 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, Southwest Louisville Chapel, 10304 Dixie Highway, Louisville, KY from 5pm-8pm and Friday, December 22, 2017 from 9am -1pm with a celebration of Nelson's life beginning at 1pm.
A graveside service will be at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery - Central, 2501 Dixie Hwy, Fort Knox, KY beginning at 2:30p.
