Mr. Murrell A. Ramsey, age 92, passed peacefully surrounded by family members on January 9, 2015. He was proud to be born at Camp Knox on January 13th, 1922, before it became a Fort. His loving wife Virginia, his son Bruce and his brother Kenneth preceded him in death.
Survivors include his loving lady friend, Dodie Gimbel; two sisters, Melva Seymour and Beverly Donlon; three daughters, Barbara Dobson, Deborah McCoy and Jenny O'Bryan; one son, Brad; eight grandchildren, Bobby Dobson, Brittany Collier, Alex McCoy, Krista Tudor, Blake and Brianna Ramsey, Mike O'Bryan, Jr. and Susan Burton; and four great-grandchildren, Jane Collier, Luke Dobson, Braylon and Abby Tudor.
He was a recipient of the 2004 Outstanding Achievement Award from du Pont Manual High School as a Quarterback/Linebacker on the 1938 undefeated, untied National Championship Football Team. A cook in the US Army, he made the best chili and fried potatoes and was known as the "Corncake Man" from his famous corncakes at Captains Cove Resort. He was a member of Fern Creek Christian Church, a World War II Vet, a Bell Pioneer, VP of Occidental Life Insurance Co, and an avid UofL fan. Being a lifelong entrepreneur, he started multiple successful businesses.
Murrell was always positive. He stated "I don't have time to be depressed, I already lived through the depression." The family extends special thanks to his friend Dr. Albert Olash Jr., and the nurses and aides who took special care of him to the end.
Visitation will be Monday 2-8 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 235 Juneau Drive, Funeral ceremony will be noon Tuesday at Fern Creek Christian Church, 9419 Seatonville Road, Fern Creek, KY 40291, with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy are asked to be given to the poor.
