Michael Edward Simmons, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away on September 28, 2026, in his hometown at the age of 41. He was born on August 29, 1985, in Louisville, and will be remembered as a man of strong spirit, deep feeling, and unmistakable honesty.
Michael attended Southwest DeKalb High School in Decatur, Georgia, and later received his GED. He worked with his hands in construction and warehouse work, and he especially enjoyed building and constructing. That hands-on work reflected a practical nature and a pride in creating something real and lasting.
He also carried a creative side that showed itself in many ways. Michael loved art and playing basketball, and he was a talented high school basketball player. He enjoyed singing and rapping, bringing energy and expression to the things he loved. Those who knew him will remember his laughter, his brutally honest way of speaking, and the advice he was always ready to give, whether it was requested or not. Above all, he was very protective of the people he loved, and that devotion will remain a lasting part of his memory.
Michael is survived by his mother, Dr. Mary Simmons; his daughters, Niryiah Applewhite and Royality Wells; and his son, JaCory Simmons. He is also survived by his grandparents, Marsha and Sylvester Brown; his brothers, James Guthrie III (Omotayo), Jullian L. Guthrie (Jessica), Jordan Guthrie, Da'Vonte Guthrie, Elijah Noble, and Kevin Noble; his uncle, Waymond Simmons; his aunts, Delores Hardy and Janice Burgess Gilbreath (Michael); his beloved cousin Ashlee Burgess, and cousins, LaTasha Tatum and Derrick Simmons. He leaves behind family and friends who will continue to carry his memory forward with love.
He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Edward Burgess, Sr., daughter, Joyday Simmons, and by his grandparents, Willie Burgess and Marcella Pruitt.
Visitation will be held on October 9, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southwest Louisville, 10304 Dixie Hwy, Louisville, KY 40272. A Celebration of Life will follow from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the same location.
