Michael Shaw, born July 14, 1951, passed away on June 12, 2026. A man of many talents and deep passions, Mike's life was marked by service, creativity, and a steadfast devotion to those who knew him.

A proud Navy veteran, Mike served honorably aboard the USS Kittyhawk CV-63 as an Aviation Structural Mechanic. His commitment and bravery were recognized with a letter of commendation for his heroic efforts during the flooding crisis in December 1975 in Washington State. His time in the military was a defining period that shaped his character and work ethic.

Following his naval service, Mike settled in Bellingham, Washington, where he discovered and nurtured a lifelong love for woodworking. With great skill and artistry, he crafted clocks and exquisite furniture pieces from Burl wood, demonstrating an appreciation for both function and beauty. Upon returning to Louisville, he brought this passion full circle by opening Shaw’s Furniture and Refinishing business, where he showcased his talent and a profound respect for antiques.

Mike was also an enthusiastic and knowledgeable collector. He was a dedicated member of the Crowncap Collectors Society International, developing a lifelong passion for the industry.  Mike published a book in October 2004 about his extensive beer can and bottle cap collection, reflecting an unusual and cherished hobby.  In addition he enjoyed attending the Street Rod Nationals. Notably, he took pride in his 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass, which he frequently entered in various car shows. Mike was known for his love of the UofL Cardinals, rarely missing a game.

A 1970 graduate of Iroquois High School, Mike was known not only for his diverse interests and skills but also for his exceptional character. Those who had the privilege of knowing him remember Mike was a true friend, a humorous and witty soul, meticulous in his work, and occasionally stoic in demeanor. Most fondly, he was regarded as a funny and gentle uncle, loved and adored by family and friends alike.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Freda Shaw; siblings, Shirley Miller, Geri Hassman and Wayne Shaw, Sr. and his nephew, Wayne Shaw, Jr.

Mike is survived by his beloved sister, Judith Ryan; sister-in-law Ethel Shaw, and his many nieces, nephews and friends.
