Michael Alan “Mike” Metcalf, 79, of Georgetown, Indiana, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Mike was born on January 3, 1947, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Joseph E. and Virginia E. Metcalf. He was lovingly raised by Helen Shafer, whose care and guidance helped shape the kind, hardworking, and resilient man he became.
Answering the call to serve his country, Mike began his military journey on April 29, 1965, when he enlisted in the United States Army in New Albany, Indiana. Over the course of three years, he demonstrated steadfast commitment, most notably as a member of the Honor Guard that ceremoniously lowered the last flag in France—a moment of profound pride in his life and a testament to his devotion.
Following his military service, Mike worked for Norfolk Southern Railroad before pursuing a career in computer programming, a field that perfectly matched his analytical mind and love of solving problems. He remained passionate about technology until a stroke brought his career to an end.
Outside of work, Mike enjoyed gardening, learning new things, and sharing his wonderful sense of humor with those around him. Whether through a clever joke, a funny story, or his quick wit, he had a way of making people smile.
Above all, Mike loved his family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carol Metcalf. He shared a close relationship with his sister, Gail Satterfield, and brothers, Rick and Glenn Metcalf, throughout his adult life.
He leaves behind his loving children, Melissa (Isaac) Crowe, Angela (Derek) Bernardi, and Michael J. Metcalf. Mike was especially proud of his granddaughter, Krysteena Metcalf “Little One”, and his great-grandchildren, Brandon “XL1” and Jaklynn “XXL1”, who brought him endless joy. His family was the center of his life, and the memories they shared together will be cherished forever.
Mike will be remembered for his intelligence, kindness, unwavering work ethic, and ability to make others laugh. He lived a life of service, curiosity, and quiet strength, leaving a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at the visitation, held on Friday, August 28, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southern Indiana, located at 3309 Ballard Ln, New Albany, IN. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m., also at the funeral home. Michael will be laid to rest with military honors at Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison, Indiana.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Mike’s legacy lives on through the family he loved, the laughter he shared, and the example he set. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
