Michael Anthony Birkla, Sr. passed away peacefully on February 11, 2026, at the age of 78, surrounded by his family in Gilbert, Arizona, where he spent his final days. Born on December 10, 1947, Michael lived a life defined by strength, loyalty, laughter, and love. A proud veteran of the United States Navy, he carried his sense of duty and commitment into every chapter of his life. He was a man who showed up—for his country, for his family, and for his friends.
Michael was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shevonne. Their love story was one of deep partnership and devotion, and we take comfort in knowing they are together again.
Michael is survived by his two sons, Michael Birkla Jr. and Robert Birkla (Sophia); and by his three cherished grandchildren, Avianna, Avery, and Austin. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and there was nothing he loved more than watching them grow, laugh, and carry forward the family spirit.
Michael will be remembered for his big personality, generous heart, and the kind of presence that filled a room—loyal, protective, and fiercely devoted to the people he loved. His legacy lives on in the stories we tell and the traditions we keep. A life well lived. A love well shared. A man deeply missed.
A gathering to remember the life and legacy of Michael Birkla will be at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals and Receptions, East Louisville Chapel, 235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, KY 40243 between 10am-1pm on Friday, March 13, 2026. Burial will follow at 2:30pm at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central, 2501 N Dixie Blvd., Radcliff, KY 40160, with Navy military honors.
The family asks that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Michael's honor.
