Melvin received Christ in 1974 and served as a faithful member at Liberty Temple. He later joined Voice of Hope Church where he served as a board member, treasurer, and Sunday school teacher. He also helped maintain the Voice of Hope facility. He had a love for music and singing in the church. When leading songs, he would often say, “And one more time!” to bring excitement to the songs.
Melvin joined the United States Army on August 4, 1953. There he received a National Defense Service Medal, an Army Occupation Medal (Germany) and a Good Conduct Medal. He received an Honorable Discharge on March 14, 1963. He retired from American Standard after faithfully working 20 years.
Melvin loved fishing, especially at McNeely Lake Park. He enjoyed traveling on cruise liners including to the Bahamas, Jamaica and Mexico. He delighted in traveling back home to Gadsden, Alabama and to Virginia Beach.
He was a loving husband and father. He liked training his family how to change car tires and engine oil; how to cut grass; and how to cook. He taught these and other skills because he wanted his family of girls to be independent and self-sufficient. He had many friends and never met a stranger.
