Max English, age 83, of Louisville (formerly Russell), KY passed on to Heaven on April 5, 2020 at his home following a brief illness. Max was born in Carter County, KY on November 1, 1936 to Wayne and Opal English.He was a Christian all his life and a member of Fairview Baptist Church in Ashland, KY. Max was the oldest and first to pass of 5 children, Rex (Carol) English, Joan (Dan) Gibbs, Tex (Sara Lou) English, and Sue (John) Sanclimenti, resulting in a lifelong and close relationship with his siblings and all his nieces and nephews that continued to his death. He grew up playing basketball and was honored as All-State in basketball in 1955 when he led his Carter High School team to a string of very successful seasons. Max retired from Marathon Petroleum/Ashland Oil after 44 years of faithful service. He was a river boat captain most of his working career, working 30 days on/30 days off. He was featured in several newspaper articles about life along the river and received a special award from the US Coast Guard at his retirement recognizing his amazing career. Max and Geneva had a cabin in Ashland, KY where they spent most of their retirement years enjoying their children, grand-children, and many friends. Max loved to tell stories about life on the river, the dangers they faced, and the comradery of the close-knit crew who became like family because of the amount of time they spent with each other. He was a member of Fred M Gross Masonic Lodge in Westwood, KY where he was a 32 degree mason, and a member of El Hasa Shrine. Max was a prime example of selfless love and devotion to his family, a loving and caring person who warmed the hearts of anyone who knew him. He will be greatly missed.He was preceded in death by Geneva, his wife and soulmate of 62 years and his son,Tony.
Max is survived by his two daughters, Sherry (Jeff) Sartaine and Stacy (Steve) Stewart, both of Louisville, KY, 4 grandchildren, Ashley (Cliff) Hilton, Alison (Nathan) McCauley, Taylor (Brandon) Clements, and Trey Marksbury, and 4 great grandchildren, Olivia, Peter, and Boone Hilton, and Nora Eden McCauley.
