Mary Carol “CoCo” Thoma passed away on Thursday, June 30, 2026, at Baptist Hospital in Louisville, KY. CoCo was born on December 24, 1946 to the late Homer and Kathleen Schmidt. Her parents gave her the name Mary Carol because she was born on Christmas Eve. Her younger brother, Tommy, gave her the nickname, Coco, and it stuck. Her husband, Bill, starting to go by Willie and they became known as the chocolate couple at their senior living facility. She was also known at Granna to her grandkids and the Dessert Queen to the participants at Lost Sheep ministries. She was a regular volunteer at the Lost Sheep Ministry that feeds the homeless.
CoCo will be remembered in her cherished role as grandmother to eight grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and for her passionate care and concern for the homeless population in Louisville. In addition to her parents, CoCo was preceded in death by granddaughter, Savannah; siblings, Jeannie, Gere, Harris, Becky, Rosemary, and Jimmy.
Coco is survived by her husband, Bill; daughters, Elaine (Fred, Jonathan, and Caroline), Ellen (Stephanie, Noah, Jace, Zane, and Zuri), and son, Mark (Lisa, Josiah, Juliet, Cole, and Titus), sister, Tatter (Bob); and brother, Tommy (Sarah); and a host of relatives and friends.
Visitation will be 9am to 11am on Thursday, July 9, 2026 in the upstairs chapel at Southeast Christian Church Main Campus, 920 Blankenbaker Parkway, Louisville, Kentucky 40243. A celebration of CoCo's life will follow at 11am there.
Memorials may be made to Hosparus or Lost Sheep Ministries.
