Mary Alice Pennington, beloved mother, daughter, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on July 3, 2026, in Clarksville, Indiana, at the remarkable age of 99. Born September 22, 1926, in New Albany, Indiana, Mary Alice lived a long and fulfilling life rooted deeply in love, compassion, and community.
Mary Alice was the cherished daughter of the late George Baldwin and Nellie Baldwin. She was preceded in death by her brothers, George Baldwin and Robert Baldwin, and her sisters, Dorothy Hardin and Betty Chinn. She was also preceded in passing by her devoted husband, Verald Farnsley.
Mary Alice leaves behind a loving family whose lives she shaped with her warmth and dedication: her sons, George Farnsley and Richard Farnsley, and their wives, Glenna and Sandra. The strength of Mary Alice's legacy is most profoundly seen in the family she nurtured and guided, taking great pride in watching her family grow and thrive over the many years.
She attended New Albany High School and entered the workforce with determination, dedicating herself to manufacturing furniture—a testament to her diligent work ethic and steadfast reliability.
Volunteerism was a central part of Mary Alice’s life. She dedicated many years to the New Albany Interfaith Graceland Baptist Church, building connections and giving selflessly to her neighbors and friends. Her naturally caring and giving spirit extended even further; she crocheted beautifully, often making hats for people in need and for children, always ready to share whatever she could to bring comfort and joy to others. Her door—and her heart—were always open.
Mary Alice was known for her loving, compassionate, and sweet nature. She brought light and laughter wherever she went, enjoying time spent sharing candy, talking on the phone, and forging new friendships—never having met a stranger. Her pets, including her beloved bird and dogs, brought her much happiness, and she relished their companionship. In quiet moments, Mary Alice kept her mind sharp with word puzzles, demonstrating her ever-curious spirit.
Her love for family was boundless. Mary Alice cherished every opportunity to gather with loved ones, delight in shared stories, and build the strong family bonds that remain her proudest accomplishment.
A visitation to honor Mary Alice Pennington will be held Thursday, July 9th,11:00am to 1:00pm, with a service to follow at 1:00pm at Graceland Baptist Church, 3600 Kamer Miller, Lane in New Albany, Indiana 47150. Family and friends are invited to attend to remember a life marked by kindness, hard work, and profound generosity.
Mary Alice Pennington’s memory will remain a testament to a life well-lived—a legacy of love, service, perseverance, and joy. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
